GAME RESERVES
Variety is the keynote of Tanzania's Game Reserve which range in terrain from lakeshore to wooded savanna and grassland. In each there exist species of animal and birds not to be encountered elsewhere in the country.
For the visitor prepared to disregard the nuisance of tsetse flies a visit to the Biharamulo Game Reserve in north-western Tanzania is a very well worth-while safari. An expedition to the Chimpanzee Reserve on the Gombe Stream, accessible only by fisherman's boat from Kigoma, is also something of an adventure.
Farther afield the Katavi Plain Reserve, south of the Ugalla River game country, has the atmosphere of unspoiled Africa; but again tsetse flies may be a little troublesome. Finally there is the Mkomazi Game Reserve adjoining the Tsavo National Park.
WWS-52 BIHARAMULO GAME RESERVE
The Biharamlo Game Reserve is an area of 1166km on the southwestern shores of Lake Victoria, eat of the Mwanza-Bukoba road in northwestern Tanzania. It was established in 1959. A rich mammal and bird fauna is present but for the visitor the area has the inconvenience of being spasmodically troubled by tsetse fly.
This Reserve comprises thickly wooded, undulating country ranging in altitude from 1127m at lake – shore to 1524m. It is mainly covered with heavy brachystgia and acacia woodlands, interspersed with more open areas, the home Liechtenstein's Hartebeest, Sable Antelope, Southern Reedbuck and Sharpe's Grysbok. Crocodile and Hippopotamus occur in the lakeshore section.
WWS-53 GOMBE STREAM GAME RESERVE
The Gombe Stream Game Reserve on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanga nyika, north of Kigoma, was established in 1945 mainly for the protection of the Chimpanzee population, which exists there. It comprises 158sq of the lakeshore and precipitous mountain country, well watered and with dense forest. Access is by boat from Kigoma. In addition to the Chimpanzees there are Red Colobus, Buffalo, Defassa Waterbuck, Bushbuck and Leopard.
